A high quality rug not only intensify your color scheme but also helps in absorbing sound in a hardwood room. Most of the homeowners want to leave their floor uncovered but with judiciously chosen area rugs you make them look much warmer. Moreover, you need area rugs to increase the life of your floor. They are either temporarily attached to the flooring with the help of an adhesive tape or loose-laid. You can put stick-on felt pads on the feet of your chairs and place small, washable throw rugs under the sink and the front door. Area rugs are available in all shapes and sizes that well matches the decor of every room.

Area rugs not only serve as an interior design standpoint but also support the unique color scheme and style of the room. In addition, they also serve a starting point for choosing the right paint and furnishings. Area rugs also assist in defining separate areas in a space, serve well for a gorgeous focal point of a room and by reducing noise provide a comfortable place for kids to play.

Benefits of using area rugs on hardwood flooring:

Area rugs will greatly enhance the overall ambiance of the room.

Area rugs possess the ability to absorb additional noise and echoes produced in a room.

Safeguard your floor from scratches and wear.

Before choosing an area rug you need to consider the following points:

The space of the room and your budget

The space you want to fill and the size of the rug needed by you. With the help of newspapers you can determine the exact area you need to cover. Just lay down the newspapers in the spaces of the room you need to cover and decide which coverage will look most appropriate for your room.

Which color and style will best suit the existing decor of your room?

Rugs for the dining room should be sufficient enough to suit the furniture. The best thing would be to add approximately 36″ to the width and length of the table. It will provide good space for the people to comfortably move their chairs in and out.

While trying to cover the whole room with a rug you need to leave behind a border of exposed floor from all the sides of the room. It will make the room appear larger.

A rug placed under the coffee table looks best when it is similar to the length of the sofa.

To protect your floor from scratches and wear and keep the rug in the place you can use a waffle-weave mat, also known as a rug grip underneath the rugs.

By shortlisting the colors and styles that best matches your room, you can narrow down your search to a considerable extent. When you have decided the color, style and budget just sit at your computer and start your search for the rug of your dreams. You indeed have the choice to choose from a variety of rugs such as, Persian rugs, Oriental Rugs, Reed rugs, rag rugs and many more. Several online furniture stores offer high quality area rugs in wide array of choices and at unbelievable prices.

Wood can not only be recycled, it is also a renewable source of material. It is not uncommon for century old homes to have the original wood floors. The floors can be installed in all parts of the home and are made up of numerous wood plies that are glued together, using a tongue and groove connection made from soft core.

The core is sandwiched between a hardwood finish layer on the top and soft wood ply below. In view of these facts, enough space should be left for expansion and wood should be acclimated. The wood planks may buckle or cup because of excessive moisture.

Make sure that sander follows wood grain direction instead of across the grain. Neutral pH cleansers developed for wood floors should be used for best results. The hardwood flooring can be stapled down over wood subfloor.

Laminate

According to Webster’s, laminate flooring is simply a hard surface covering utilizing a fiberboard core and melamine wear layer, which is available in blocks, planks, and squares. The greatest enemy of laminate floors is dust. Cleaning or getting rid of such dust from laminate floors is, however, a simple and easy task.

Laminate flooring can provide the hardwood effect but at a cheaper price. Recent trends indicate that laminate floors are fast becoming popular not only in Europe but also in the US. When you are trying to choose between laminate floors or wooden floors, you must learn a bit about how each one is installed and how to keep them looking their best so you will be able to decide which one will fit into your lifestyle easier.

Products

It is also difficult to have carpet in nice colours, as light colours are much more prone to being stained by dropped food or drink, necessitating the use of expensive cleaning products that may not even work. Such specialty products ensure that the etching and cleaning of the subfloor results in a strongly bonded epoxy layer. During the last decade the advances in plastics, paints, epoxies, polymers and many other related products has led to the introduction of a whole new arena of products that may be used to coat, cover and enhance your garage floors.

Many companies have been in the decorative concrete and remodeling business for decades and have seen and used numerous products for the home and in commercial and industrial settings. Within these basic types, there are many variations, so it is worth getting information about many products before determining which one is right for you.

Install

A cost comparison between replacing the old worn out wall to wall carpeting and installing parquet flooring will show that the parquet choice is less expensive if you install it yourself. You will be able to learn firsthand how to install the floor, and you will be able to ask an installation expert any questions you may have regarding installing flooring.

Color

Think of this as the same as doing your nails, first you remove the old finish, then base coat, color and topcoat. The aesthetic appeal of hardwood is also influenced to a large extent by mineral streaking, the presence of knots and shade and color variation. The other great thing about hardwood floors is that there is a huge selection of hardwood in the market, this means that you can choose the exact color you want for each room or for the whole house, there is no need to compromise on the looks of the hardwood floors simply because there is such a verity of color and textures that almost anyone can find what is best for him or her house.

It is easy to add texture, color and contrast to a room by varying your floor covering.

Vinyl

Vinyl kitchen flooring offers many benefits to the homeowner who has children, pets, or lives an active lifestyle. In fact Vinyl kitchen flooring is the best choice for many homeowners due to the fact of its extreme durability and strength. These porous surfaces will allow moisture to loosen your vinyl tiles or ruin your carpet.

When the cost of vinyl flooring and carpeting got low enough, wooden floors were reserved for high-end applications. If you take the time and make the effort, you can remove the vinyl and totally change the feel and appearance of the area with wood flooring.

Subfloors and the issues surrounding them

A subfloor is what is underneath your present floor covering. Subfloors can become a nightmare if you do not follow the correct procedures because whatever goes on top of the subfloor will be affected by it.

Damp, damaged membranes etc can allow moisture to rise upwards, moisture will always go to the driest part. Our fitters will check the floor for moisture and the surrounding area for humidity to ensure that there will be no problems once the wood floor is laid. The moisture content of the floor screed should be checked along with the relative humidity.

If the following procedures are followed then you will be providing the right environment for a beautiful natural floor that should last a lifetime and you will not get “cupping” or warping problems which only occur where there is excessive moisture. Cupping is where the edges of the boards curl up.

Types of Subfloor

There are 5 basic types of sub floors upon which we fix hard wood floors.

Concrete screeds, power floated floors Joists Ground floor joists with open air below which are found in old houses that have air bricks and probably earth underneath Old floor boards Chipboard or plywood structure Underfloor Heating Screed

Concrete: Concrete screeded floors can vary in condition and levels. If it is flat and smooth with a moisture content of 4% or less then we can glue the boards directly to the floor using the Bona R 850 this is always the best way rather than using an underlay and floating the boards.

If your subfloor is not flat and smooth you can use self leveling compounds but be aware that they can lift if you do not have the right one and it is not applied correctly.

If you have your own builder or fitter please make sure they are experienced in fitting floors and the consequences of not following the correct procedures for concrete screeds.

To be extra cautious you should always put a Damp Proof Membrane (DPM) like the Bona R580 on any concrete screed, concrete takes 10 years to completely dry out and if the membrane underneath cracks for any reason such as subsidence which can happen in long dry spells of weather then moisture can work through the screed and affect the floor. Also by using a DPM you will be protecting the floor even if the screed has not fully dried out on the bottom.

Joists: If you are fixing floor boards directly to joist you can either use secret nails or screws. These are applied using a purpose made nail gun or ***** fixer which is set at a predetermined angle so that the groove of the next board can be fitted up without the ***** or nail showing.

The joists must be in good condition and free of any wood worm, damp decay, dry rot or any other fungal type disease that can affect their integrity.

Older homes in the Victorian and Edwardian era had joists over open ground with air bricks if the circulation is blocked then it can lead to serious damp problems. If you have enough height then a plywood base using 8’ x 4’ marine plywood can be screwed to the joists and the floor boards glued directly to the plywood. This will cut out drafts and prevent the damp air affecting the boards. If you do not have the height due to the levels in the house then you must always use an engineered board and ensure that all the ventilation openings and air bricks are clear

Old Floor Boards: Generally old floor boards will be pine or cheap softwood. If these boards are sound, free of dry rot and fungus, then a new engineered hardwood floor can either be secret nailed, screwed or glued directly on to these boards.

If the boards are loose then it would be best to ***** them firmly into the joist. If necessary an acoustic and thermal underlay can be placed between the two layers of wood when nailing or screwing down, this will reduce noise levels including creaking and helps to reduce the transmission of cold air from below.

If you are unsure then our fitters would be happy to make a site visit to ascertain the best way of fixing your floor

Chipboard or Plywood Floors: Chipboard and ply wood sub bases are the ideal surface to fit a hardwood floor. You will be able to choose any of our wooden floors and on plywood they can be nailed, screwed or glued, but on chipboard due to it being particles of wood and glue nails and screws would not hold properly over time so it is always best to glue the floor boards down.

Underfloor Heating: This is a specialist area and should be treated with care. There are many different systems but for wooden floors we always think that a hot water system is the best. Electric mats are OK but not as effective. Whatever system you have the manufacturer’s instructions should always be followed. If it is a screeded system then always glue the boards direct to the screed this ensure not heat loss You can find out more in our underfloor heating section.

Hardwood flooring can beautify any home. No matter which type you choose, it will cost a pretty penny. There are so many factors that determine the cost of wood flooring. Some flooring is very expensive, while some are fairly cheap. Cheap hardwood floors can save you a lot of money and still look great.

Wholesale flooring companies are a great option to consider when looking for cheap hardwood floors. You would be surprised at how many wholesale flooring companies are around you. The advantage of buying from a wholesaler over a retail store is that you can often find the same quality for up to 50% off.

The downside to purchasing from a wholesaler is that often times you are required to purchase a certain amount of wood planks. Therefore, you can end up wasting a lot of money if you are looking to cover a small area. If you want to fill a large space, going to a wholesale flooring company is your best bet.

Laminate flooring is an alternative to getting cheap flooring. Laminate flooring is typically cheaper than your standard hard wood planks. Although quality will suffer compared to wood planks, they still will give a warm appealing look to your home.

There are numerous variables that will determine the cost of your hardwood floors. A typical American grown wooden floor plank will cost you around $4 per square foot. Exotic wood can be quite costly and will go down considerably with softer woods. Consider colors of the wood as this can impact the price of flooring considerably.

Light colored woods tend to be cheaper than rich hues because there is less style and they are easier to come by. Light colored woods are very appealing, although they are not as popular as more expensive rich hues.

There are several things that can affect the cost when shopping for hardwood floors. Be sure to consider the areas of flooring, color of the wood, and the style before making a purchase. Wholesale flooring companies can help you fill large areas while saving a ton of money at the same time. Otherwise, stick to lighter wood and possibly even laminate flooring.

OK guys sit back and brace yourselves this one is not going to be funny. After I posted my blog on last Friday regarding my take on todays eonomy I began to see other opinions especially regarding it\’s effect on the modern day homeowner’s plan\’s or lack thereof on home renovations. In a blog posted 2/1/09 on “Walletpop” entitled “Home slump hits home decor trends”, Zac Bisonette cites “fancy kitchens and fireplaces that were so important to buyers during the housing boom are going out of style”. He goes on to say “It\’s hard to know what to make of these trends. Are they long-term changes in taste or is luxury just taking a leave of absence while people cope with plummeting job security….Even if luxury items like granite countertops and fireplaces are desirable, they may not be desirable enough to justify the additional expense.”

In the high flying days of the past ten years homeowners had available easy credit in the form of home equity loans, readily available credit cards and revolving credit terms from retailers. In 2008 with the U.S. banking and real estate crisis in full free fall these facilities have all but vanished. Banks have stopped lending, home mortgage loans are virtually a thing of the past and credit card companies have raised their interest rates and lower the credit available even to their best customers. Its easy to see why American’s taste for luxury items has diminished. The fact still remains, as I pointed out in my blog of 2/13/09, that this does not eliminate the need for refreshing of that tired old kitchen or bathroom to make your house more saleable if that is your fate or to make you home feel better to your family in these tough times. What it does mandate is a more frugal approach. Frugal does not mean “cheap” but instead indicates a more careful reasoned approach to how something is expended. Can you afford to replace your old laminated countertops with granite? Can you reasonably replace that linoleum in the kitchen with real hardwood floors? Can you afford custom made cabinets? new stainless steel appliances? Glass tile backsplashes? And the list goes on and on. In general the frugal answer is NO! This does not mean that you can’t make reasonable, attractive and useful changes to your kitchen or bathroom. You just have to be smarter in your choices as well as shopping smarter.

Here are some recommendations. Instead of granite you can choose from a wide assortment of man made surfaces, such as Corian, which in most cases can be half the cost of Granite and a whole lot easier to maintain. You can choose from dozens of forms of laminated flooring, such as \”Pergo” instead of hardwood floors again saving 50% or more. When recently finishing a family room/kitchen project in our basement I was able to find a weekend sale on laminated flooring at a major retailer for $.99 a square foot. That’s less than the $9.00 per sq.yard and less than the least expensive carpet plus my son was able to install it. We could not have installed carpet and that would have added another $3 to $4 per sq.yd or more to the price and we had the look of hardwood at a fraction of the price. As for custom made cabinets the best buy in cabinets and vanities today is in prefab cabinets which come broken down flat in cartons and you assemble them yourself. The most familiar of these come from vendors such as “Ikea” or like “Kraftmaid” available at the large home improvement stores. Not only are these cabinets a great buy but are high in quality and features. Can’t afford stainless steel appliances? Look at “Craigslist” any day and you will find great deals in practically new appliances at a drastic cut in price. The bottom line is shop smart and make educated choices. Take these ideas and team them with the suggestions I made in my previous blog such as upgraded faucets, sinks, new paint and other fixtures and you can have a great looking functional new look and space in your home at a reasonable attainable price. To reiterate my point, it is far more important than just vanity that we consider making these improvements. The economy is consumer driven. If we expect things to turn around quickly we all must regain our confidence that the American economy is resilient and has been a shining example to the world for 200+ years. To this end we need to invest in reasonable improvements. We need to spend carefully but we need to spend. Money sitting in a savings account drawing zero interest is not helping the economy. The banks aren’t lending the money, they are sitting on it. Investing in home improvements creates demand, creates jobs and works to restore the public confidence in our economic system.

Regarding V groove laminate flooring(VGLF), there are 2 types: Painted V groove(painted VG) and pressed V groove(pressed VG).

The edge of pressed VG is pressed down with machine. There is abrasion resistance on the edge. But the edge of painted VG is cut off. And there is no wear resistance layer on the bevel.

Pressed VG is a bit more expensive than painted VG due to extra material and process cost. But pressed VG is a bit more like hardwood flooring(HF) as its length is around 807mm instead of 1212mm. The length for HF is usually around 807mm.

VGLF becomes more and more popular due to its strong wear resistance, hardwood like appearance, easy maintenance and cheap price.

Like common laminate flooring, VGLF is strong abrasion resistant. Scratch and press mark are difficult to appear on the surface of VLF. The ratings available are AC1, AC2, AC3 and AC4. But many manufacturers can’t work on AC3 because their grooving tool is too weak for AC3 rating on VGLF.

VGLF is very like HF due its surface and dimensions. The V shape, on the 4 sides of VGLF is designed to imitate the edge of HF. Regarding painted VG, the normal sizes are 1212*90*8.3mm, 1212* 90*12.3mm, 1212*126*8.3mm, 1212*126*12.3mm, 1212*143*8.3mm, 1212*143*12.3mm, 1212*163 *8.3mm, 1212*163*12.3mm. For pressed VG, the normal sizes are 807*90*8.3mm, 807*90*12.3mm, 807*126*8.3mm and 807*126*12.3mm. These sizes, especially the sizes for pressed VG are the normal dimensions for HF. The bevel of painted VGLF is painted with wearing resistance lacquer because the support material would appear at the cut if there were no lacquer. The lacquer color is similar with the surface design of laminate flooring. Normally the work is done manually. So it is difficult for the painted bevel to be in line strictly. But you even can’t find the bevel is painted if the paint color is very similar with the surface color and the stadia is over 1 meter.

There is no gap on the bottom of the V groove after VGLF is installed. And the first layer of VGLF is wear resistance paper. Dirty is very hard to penetrate the first of layer of VGLF. And dirty is easy to remove. So VGLF is easy to care.

The available surface for pressed VG is only mirror surface. Painted VG can work with almost all types of surface. UV-shine and hand scraped surface already have bevel at the edge, so V groove finish is not necessary for the 2 kinds of surfaces.

The choice of flooring can dramatically enhance the look and feel of a room so it is important to choose the right material and product. Flooring suppliers are giving home owners more choice than ever when it comes to flooring options and with carpets, laminate floors, ceramic tiles and hardwood flooring all on offer, finding suitable flooring is easy.

Carpets are available in a huge range of colours, patterns and textures to provide the perfect match for your taste. Plain carpets can be used in smaller rooms to create a sense of space whilst patterned carpets are often used in high use rooms to mask general wear and tear. Carpet flooring is popular in living rooms and bedrooms where a touch of comfort is always welcome. You can prolong the life of your carpet by rearranging your room periodically to prevent shuffle lanes appearing.

Laminate flooring has become increasingly popular since it was introduced over 15 years ago. There are hundreds of laminate flooring styles available including wood, stone, brick and tile. Laminate floors are often used by home owners who are looking for a cheap flooring solution whilst maintaining a stunning finish. The quality of laminate flooring is continually improving and many products now offer an incredibly cost effective flooring solution. Laminate flooring is constructed using high density fibre (HDF) board with a high resolution photo of the material on the surface. Manufacturers of laminate flooring use different techniques and systems so always follow the instructions provided by them when laying flooring.

Although laminate and carpet flooring can be used for bathroom floors, many flooring suppliers recommend the use of ceramic tiles or vinyl as they are water proof and easy to keep clean. Ceramic tiles can be used to add a natural look to a room and are popular in kitchens and bathrooms. The tiles are easily cleaned and very hard wearing. Slate flooring, with its cool appearance and clean lines, is one of the most popular choices at flooring suppliers. Other ceramic flooring options include marble, granite and terracotta, which can be used to create a Mediterranean look in kitchens and conservatories.

For the ultimate in chic and style however there is no other flooring cover that rivals the warmth and finish offered by a traditional hardwood floor. Although more expensive than laminate flooring, a hardwood floor will last a lifetime with some wood floors lasting over 100 years. Compare this to the amount of times a carpet will need changing and the price difference becomes less significant.

Wooden flooring is available in traditional woods such as ash and beech and more exotic options such as walnut and bamboo. Oak flooring is the biggest seller in Europe and the USA and is heavily produced on both continents. Different wood species offer varying tones, grain and durability. Hardwood flooring adds value to homes and is recommended for people who suffer from dust allergies.

Whilst wooden flooring is an attractive option is not suitable for every situation. Wood floors have to attach directly to the sub-base so therefore cannot be installed on concrete. Laminate flooring is installed as a floating floor and can therefore be used on a wider range of sub-bases. Laying flooring on a poor sub-base will affect the quality of the flooring and reduce its lifespan.

With cheap flooring options now available, home owners can change their flooring as often as they redecorate. Interior styles are constantly changing and flooring suppliers are constantly updating their products to meet demand.

condition of the underlying wood and the finish that protects it. Are there signs of neglect to erase, or do you see a well-tended surface that needs just a light clean and polish to maintain it?

If the answer is no, then consider refinishing you floor.

Keeping your newly installed hardwood floor clean is not as easy as you might have heard some “pros” say. First of all, if you want to be professional about it, you’ll have bought some chemical cleaning solutions, which are pretty expensive and probably caused quite a hole in your pocket.

Using vinegar is a much cheaper alternative to clean hardwood floors is indeed possible and it can be quite effective too. In the short run, it’s probably the most efficient of options, because it’s cheap and it works. But in the long run, when you clean hardwood floors with vinegar, you slowly damage the floor’s finish, and just like all these floors refinishing becomes essential to the continued use of that flooring.

Do vacuum your floor frequently as sweeping cannot always clean up your floor thoroughly. For example, in the gaps between planks, the dust and dirt that has gathered up can only be picked up by a vacuum, not a brush.

Don’t leave water or any other water-based solution to dry up on the floor. This will cause it to expand and degrade over time.

I have heard a lot of people comment that hardwood floors are the best. This may be true, that is, for most residences. This is due to their durability, which has been tested by time. There are a lot of homes which are inlaid with hardwood flooring for a long time already. However, they have been able to maintain the fabulous look of the floor. Even if you need to have it refinished once in a while, hardwood will always be leading the competition between flooring products.

There is nothing like the look of a freshly installed hardwood floor, and while wood floors can last forever, you\’ll still need to refinish them from time to time. Most floors can be refinished every 3-4 years, pet owners and those with high traffic floors may want to consider taking on the project on a more frequent basis. Fortunately, its just a matter of sanding and applying a finishing product to bring your floors back to life.

Hardwood floors can be a beautiful asset to your home. They lend a sense of elegance to any room. Just like anything else, however, your hardwood floors require maintenance, and there will come a time when you should consider refinishing hardwood floors. Luckily, hardwood floor refinishing is not impossibly difficult. With a bit of effort and patience, your floors will be good as new again.

Selling your home and buying a cheap home instead can sometimes be a good way to make a profit. The tax law lets you do this repeatedly. What is the downside of this strategy? You have to move a lot.

The idea here is simple. You sell your house, and move into one that costs less. You get to pocket the difference without paying taxes on the gain, thanks to the tax law that lets you take an exemption on the capital gains from the sale of your home.

There are three basic ways to do this.

1. Downsizing For Retirement

Maybe you don’t need a big house any longer. The kids are on their own, and you are tired of cleaning 3,000 square feet of space. Fortunately, you have paid off the mortgage loan, so when you sell for $355,000 and buy that cute little house nearby for $220,000, you get a nice chunk of cash to play with.

2. Moving To A Cheaper Town

Perhaps you are retired, or you just have a business or profession that can be pursued anywhere (like this internet business that lets us live in the mountains of Colorado). If you don’t have any other big reasons to stay in the city you are in, you have an opportunity. A house just like yours can be bought for half the price somewhere else.

In 2002 we paid just $17,500 for a two bedroom home in a beautiful mountain town in Montana. It had hardwood floors and a full basement, and it would have cost five times that much an hour away in Missoula. We have moved a few times since then, but even the house we are in now would be twice as much in Tucson, Arizona, where we last lived.

The point is that there are great differences in prices of homes around the country. Sometimes the low priced homes are in areas where you wouldn’t want to live. But often they are in great little towns and big cities that you might love to live in. It is easy to research all of this on the internet now, starting with our own web site, HousesUnderFiftyThousand.com.

Find a town you love and buy a house for $60,000 less than you sell your current home for. That’s a $60,000 profit for all practical purposes. You might even live in a nicer home and a nicer town.

3. Moving With The Real Estate Booms

You could use this strategy repeatedly, if you do your homework. Buy in an area just before a real estate boom, then after your home goes up in value, sell it for a tax-free profit. The tax code allows you to do this every two years. Before selling you find the next town that is about to boom, and start shopping for a cheap home there. Do this six times in your life and you might build up a nice little nest egg.
